It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Alhaji Ahmadu Kurfi, the Maradin Katsina and District Head of Kurfi, who dedicated his life to the service of his people and nation. Born in April 1930 to Maradi Aliyu II, who ruled Kurfi from 1915 to 1964, and Amina Muhammadu Dikko, a descendant of the Emir of Katsina, Alhaji Ahmadu Kurfi exemplified leadership, commitment, and vision throughout his remarkable journey.  

Early Life and Education

Alhaji Ahmadu Kurfi began his education at Central Elementary School, Katsina, in 1941, and later attended Middle School from 1944 to 1947. His academic pursuit continued at the prestigious Barewa College, Zaria, where he studied from 1947 to 1950. In 1953, he earned a Teacher Grade I Certificate at the Higher Elementary Training College before advancing his education in the United Kingdom. At the University of Hull, he graduated with a degree in Economics in 1958, marking the beginning of his illustrious career.  

Distinguished Career in Public Service

Alhaji Ahmadu Kurfi’s career spanned several decades, starting as a teacher in 1951. Upon his return from the UK in 1958, he served as an Assistant District Officer in Abuja under the Northern Nigerian Government. His administrative excellence led him to the Federal Ministry of Defence, where he rose to the position of Deputy Permanent Secretary.  

From 1966 onward, he took on pivotal roles, including Executive Secretary of the Northern Nigerian Marketing Board and Federal Electoral Commission (FEDECO), and Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Defence. Over his 35-year service, he left a legacy of integrity and nation-building, retiring in 1986.  

Leadership as District Head of Kurfi

In 1992, Alhaji Ahmadu Kurfi was appointed the first District Head of Kurfi, a position he held until his passing. His tenure was marked by unprecedented development in Kurfi, including the establishment of educational institutions, improvement of water resources, and enhanced infrastructure. His leadership ensured the prosperity of Kurfi town and its environs, fostering growth and unity among his people.  

Contributions to Literature and Agriculture

Outside public service, Alhaji Ahmadu Kurfi was an accomplished writer, authoring the book "Election Contest: Candidates’ Companion" and contributing articles to various newspapers and magazines. As a farmer and businessman, he cultivated staple crops and served as a director of Kurfi Brothers Ltd., supporting local economic growth.  

A Legacy of Achievements

Under the Maradi dynasty, significant strides were made in Kurfi, including the establishment of the first primary school, Friday Congregational Mosque, and improved water supply systems. Alhaji Ahmadu Kurfi furthered this legacy with projects like the construction of the Local Government Secretariat, development of educational resource centers, and provision of potable water.  

A Symbolic Leader

Alhaji Ahmadu Kurfi was not only a revered traditional ruler but also a beacon of hope for his people. His palace became a place of solace for the community, symbolizing justice, fairness, and compassion.

Alhaji Ahmadu Kurfi’s passing is a tremendous loss, not just to Kurfi but to the nation as a whole. He was a visionary leader, a dedicated public servant, and a compassionate traditional ruler whose legacy will live on in the hearts of many.
